FDA Information

Nizatidine was first developed by Eli Lilly & Co., and was marketed in 1987. It is considered to be equipotent with ranitidine and differs by the substitution of a thiazole-ring in place of the furan-ring in ranitidine.

Nazitidine proved to be the last new histamine H2-receptor antagonists introduced prior to the advent of proton pump inhibitors.

Certain preparations of nizatadine are now available over the counter (under the brand name Axid AR®) in various countries including the United States. The prescription version is known by the brand name Axid®.
